CHANGE OF ALLEGIANCE – HAPPY DAYS FOR HOCKEY STAR

Adam Imer is realising his hockey playing dream but not in the way he first imagined.

BRAZILIAN-Adam in action for Brazil

The 33 year-old Gold Coast physiotherapist played for the Australian under 21 side during his early years. He played in three national championship winning state sides with Queensland in 2013,15,18 and was obviously close to being packed in the world beating Kookaburra team.

Of course he didn’t know how close or not he was to being picked in the top side and a long term goal was always to play at an Olympic Games.

Fate intervened. Adam met his wife Tatiana, they fell in love, got married and after two years he gained citizenship in Brazil. That opened the door for him to play for Brazil, which he had no hesitation in walking through and grabbing the opportunity.

After an initial teething period, the Brazil squad embraced Adam as one of their own and he went on to play for his new country at the Rio Olympic Games where his outstanding play as a roving central mid-fielder provided star power in the team.

Just cherry picking and going to the Olympics was not Adam’s goal and he committed to the Brazil national team and plays regularly in tournaments around the world for them. His next assignment is the Pan American Games tournament in Santiago, Chile in October and he’s busy making sure he’s prepared physically for the challenge.

He plays club hockey in the Brisbane league for Labrador and is confident he’ll turn up for international duties in good shape.

As a youngster growing up Adam initially played soccer but being from a hockey mad family, it was only a matter of time before he picked up a stick and took up the hockey challenge.

A star student at Sydney University, Adam gained his physiotherapy qualifications and 10 years ago set up his own very successful business on the Gold Coast. He qualified from Sydney University with a bachelor of physiotherapy, class A honours and from Griffith University with a master of sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

All through his international hockey journey with Brazil, Adam’s best supporter has been his wife Tatiana. An elite international sportswoman in her own right, Tatiana competed on the international triathlon circuit, was a champion swimmer and surfer and now competes in endurance trail events.
