FROM CANTERBURY TO CANTERBURY- BRONSON REUBEN-RUGBY LEAGUE RISING STAR

Born and bred in Christchurch New Zealand, rising rugby league star Bronson Reuben caught the eye of NRL recruits, took a punt and moved with his family to Sydney to chase his dreams.

The 17 year-old, out of the Northern Bulldogs club in Christchurch (formerly the Kaiapoi Bulldogs) caught the eye of Aussie scouts in 2020 at a camp for elite players in Auckland. Initial interest came from the Sydney Roosters but Bronson ended up joining the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs and last year the family moved to the big smoke of Sydney.

Of Ngai Tahu descent, Bronson had already shown he’s a potential NRL star playing through the age groups for Canterbury rep sides in New Zealand. The former St Bedes College student began playing league with Kaiapoi as a six year-old, Kaiapoi the last club former Kiwi coach Frank Endacott coached. Frank has been a great supporter of Bronson as well.

The youngster wasted little time establishing himself in Sydney, playing in his regular position in the halves for the under 17 Harold Matthews competition winning Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs.

He’s also a talented touch player and excelled at athletics, representing Canterbury in New Zealand in both those sports.

There’s a very strong rugby league pedigree Bronson is following. His dad Kyle Reuben played rugby league for 30 years as did his uncle Josh Reuben both playing for Canterbury, South Island and New Zealand age group rep teams.

Bronson isn’t putting all his eggs in one basket. He’s aiming to do a Batchelor of law at university in Sydney and aiming to make the Bulldogs under 19 team on his journey to his ultimate goal of playing in the best rugby league competition in the world, the NRL.

It’s no surprise this intelligent young man has strong leadership qualities having already captained several teams during his rugby league career to date and with his family totally dedicated to supporting him, having moved to Australia, he’s got everything going for him if he keeps on his current trajectory.

Listen to my chat with Bronson and his parents Kyle and Kirsten, it’s really interesting and I always love it when parents are so committed to their kids they are prepared to move countries for them.

BRONSON REUBEN-Remember this name because one day he just might light up the rugby league fields like one of his idols Shaun Johnson currently does for the Warriors.
